The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), a residential higher education facility, is situated atop Observatory hill, one of Shimla’s seven hills. Founded in 1964, this institution was publicly opened on October 20, 1965, by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, a former president of India.
This instructional centre has a more than 100-year history. IIAS was initially constructed as Lord Duffein’s residence because he served as India’s Viceroy between 1884 and 1888.
At that time, it was referred to as the Visceregal Lodge. The Separation of Pakistan and East Pakistan in 1947 and the Shimla Conference in 1945 were two major decisions made at this structure. The building was given a new name after India gained its independence: “Rashtrapati Nivas,” and the President of India used it as a summer getaway. Later, it was transformed into a research facility for Indian humanities, social, natural, and natural and social sciences. The structure has a charming and alluring architectural attractiveness.
The building was created by Henry Irwin, an architect with the Public Works Division. This historic structure has a beautiful appearance that mesmerises passersby at first glance thanks to the combination of grey stone and exotic Burmese teak. The campus also houses a lovely park and a museum with a wide selection of exhibits.
