For availing tickets for the Kalka-Shimla Heritage toy train ride, you need to book one month before the date of the travelling, as soon as booking opens. IRCTC website and also online travel vendors facilitate ticket booking via Internet. It is advisable that you book your tickets as soon as possible as the train journey is high in demand and tickets sell off fast, especially during the peak tourist seasons such as summer vacations and Christmas and New Year time.
Vehicles travelling from outside Himachal Pradesh and not bearing Himachal Pradesh license plate need National Green Tribunal (NGT) permit to visit Rohtang pass. It is to be noted that only limited vehicles are permitted to Rohtang Pass on a daily basis. Hence, it is advisable that you book your trip in advance, as permits are limited and are issued online on a first-come-first-serve basis. Tour operators and Himachal tour package providers usually book permits for visitors. Rohtang Pass remains closed on Tuesdays on account of maintenance purposes.
If you are eager to see fresh apples hanging from trees and taste the seasonal delicacy, visit Himachal during the months of June to August. Apples start ripening in June and before the fruits are harvested, it is delightful to watch them hang from trees. Depending upon the altitude of the apple orchards, apple growing season varies from the month of June to November.
